As oral & maxillofacial surgeons, Drs. Rothman and Dr. Kim have expertize in the diagnosis and treatment of many oral diseases. One area of expertize deals with pathologic changes of a patient’s oral mucosa.
When the inner lining of the mouth (oral mucosa) changes from its normally pink hue, it is a good idea to get it checked out. This discoloration occurs due to the deposition of different colored materials over the oral mucosa which can be either physiological or pathological in nature. Oral pigmentation changes may be associated with certain minor local factors or an indication of a more dire underlying systemic disease. Sometimes, it can be the first indication of several important and severe diseases, and needs to be examined by a professional.
